¡Ay, cómo detesto la ignorancia!

Estoy inscrita a la página del Time en Facebook. Me gusta la revista física, pero a veces las noticias ya son del pasado en este mundo tan acelerado en el que vivimos. Aunque disfruto sus artículos de opinión y algunos editoriales sobre economía que son bastante interesantes, las noticias del día a día las sigo por Twitter (pueden inscribirse a mi lista de noticias de México, Estados Unidos y el Mundo) y Facebook.

Para los que no lo saben, hoy en la frontera de México con Estados Unidos, un niño de 15 años que andaba en bicicleta con otros chicos de su edad, estando del lado Mexicano, lanzaron unas piedras a un oficial Norte Americano de la patrulla fronteriza que había detenido a un Mexicano que había cruzado ilegalmente. El oficial, sin dudarlo, levantó su pistola y le disparó una sola vez en la cabeza. Lo mató.

El leer el artículo me hizo pensar en cuanta gente matan día a día con la justificación de que "estaban cruzando ilegalmente". Hace unos días mataron a otro Mexicano que vivía en el condado de San Diego desde hace más de 20 años porque lo detuvieron, le pidieron papeles y al no tenerlos, lo golpearon hasta quitarle la vida. Esto es un reflejo claro de lo que está pasando en Arizona. Obviamente, no me chupo el dedo, y sé que desde hace mucho tiempo matan a mis paisanos tratando de cruzar la frontera, la ley de Arizona es sólo una manifestación abierta de la xenofobia que existe en este País. Cuantos documentales no hay sobre el tema. Mexicanos, Centro Americanos y Sudamericanos tratan de cruzar al "otro lado" y no siempre les sale bien.

Yo no justifico la inmigración ilegal, pero creo que la manera en la que tratan a los que lo intentan es inhumana y va en contra de cualquiera de los derechos humanos. Pero el hecho de matar a un adolescente sólo porque estaban arrojando piedras, me parece atroz. ¿En dónde está el límite? ¿Quién responde por este chico y por su familia? Si fuera al revés ¿qué pasaría? Si fuera un niño blanco en la frontera del lado gringo y un oficial Mexicano le hubiera disparado, ¿cuál sería la reacción de Estados Unidos?

Pero la cosa no queda ahí. Aún peor fue mi disgusto al leer las palabras de la gente que publicó sus comentarios. ¡Vaya ignorancia! ¡Vaya déspotas! ¡Vaya arrogantes! Por supuesto, ¿saben qué paso? Que no me aguanté, claro que no. Puse mis comentarios. Ahí van:

"To all of those who like this and agree with what happened:
You are so immersed in the belief that every immigrant is illegal and that every illegal is Mexican, that you have lost the big picture.

First of all, the US was built by immigrants. You feel proud of saying that you are Irish or English descendant (who, by the way, also came to this country illegally), but when it comes to Mexicans you all are outraged.

Second, in this case, the member of the Border Patrol shot a person, who was not armed, was no threat and was not illegally in the US (which, of course, wouldn't be a reason to shoot him anyway). He was in Mexico. This agent should be presented with criminal charges and condemned for murder in the first degree.

Third, you all believe what your Republican politicians want you to believe. You all have the idea that illegal immigrants are taking your jobs (who is going to work on the fields, factories and restaurants? Are you willing to do it for 5 dollars/hour or less?); that all illegals are criminals (Mexican crime rate is not higher than that of any other race or ethnicity); that all Hispanics are illegal and you can detain them, persecute them and treat them like criminals just because of the color of their skin. The Arizona law is only an example of the increasing xenophobia the country is experimenting. You criticize and disapprove the politics and atrocious acts during Hitler's government, well look at yourselves in the mirror, because you are following the same path.

Open your eyes people, the US is no longer the powerful, unbeatable country it once was. Your worst mistake is to believe that you are owners of the truth and the only ones living in this world; that you have the right to attack and take over other countries if you please to, to supposedly bring on peace at the cost of other people's lives and democracy. And above all, your biggest defect is ignorance. Be open and learn what is out there. Stop believing that you are the best and that you know better. Countries in Europe, Asia and even Latin America are growing at fast paces, you are being left behind. If you continue being so close minded, not learning other languages, visiting other countries and respecting other cultures, you are destined to perish. Change people, change."

La única respuesta fue de un tal Adam Brown. Este fue su comentario:

"Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........lol"

Jajajaja. A lo cual, sólo respondí:

"Adam, I rest my case: you are an ignorant."

Una hora más tarde, Adam "el ignorante" respondió:

"blaa blaa blaa....."

Finalmente, hace unos minutos respondí:

"Adam, I am glad that you don't have anything else to say. You just can't have an intelligent, informed conversation because you are not capable of it. Your reaction just proves what I explained above. You are too full of yourself and you believe that your tiny perspective is the only one that matters. You are a living example of the worst problems this country has: arrogance and ignorance. Good luck in life with that attitude!"

Por un lado me da tristeza que, ante un debate informado, la única respuesta puedan ser monosílabos (si es que a expresiones infantiles se les puede llamar monosílabos). Esto nada más demuestra que la gente no está preparada para compartir puntos de vista y defender su postura con fundamento. Es una pena. Aunque, por otro lado, espero que puedan abrir los ojos ante lo que es inminente: su ignorancia los llevará a tener un retraso sobre el resto del Mundo y eventualmente los países a los que siempre han visto hacia abajo, los dejarán atrás. Ojalá abran los ojos... aunque lo malo no es ser ignorante, sino creer que no lo eres y actuar como si supieras. Eso es aún más peligroso.

Veremos si Adam Brown alias "el ignorante" tiene alguna nueva expresión infantil en su amplio vocabulario.
